Geographic Information Science in Higher Education: Initiatives at Kumaun University | Esri
The Department of Geography at Kumaun University, SSJ Campus Almora, has been at the forefront of developing Geographic Information System (GIS) infrastructure for governance, education, and research in Uttarakhand since 2002. This effort began with the establishment of the Natural Resources Data Management System (NRDMS) Centre, which created digital data for the Almora district with support from the NRDMS Division of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in New Delhi. The Centre has collaborated with various departments to tailor GIS infrastructure to their specific needs.
In 2008, Kumaun University was designated as a Centre of Excellence for NRDMS in Uttarakhand. This led to the establishment of advanced laboratories equipped with GIS technologies, including GIS, GPS, Remote Sensing, and Computer Cartography.
Objectives of the Centre
The main objectives of the COE NRDMS are to:
- Develop and demonstrate improved methods and techniques for managing geospatial datasets in Uttarakhand.
- Enhance the capacity of stakeholders to utilize current Geographic Information Science for decentralized planning in the state.
- Conduct regular education, training, and research programs focused on Geographic Information Science.
GIS Capacity Building Initiatives
To address the third objective and produce skilled professionals in Geographic Information Science, the COE NRDMS launched an M.Sc. in Remote Sensing and GIS program in 2008. Recognizing the increasing demand for skilled personnel in this field, the Centre has also developed Ph.D. programs, diploma courses, and certificate courses in Geographic Information Science. Looking ahead, the COE NRDMS aims to integrate Geographic Information Science into undergraduate and secondary school curricula.
Additionally, the Centre organizes Capacity Building Training for planners, administrators, educators, researchers, and students at both the district and state levels. These training sessions focus on the development, updating, and application of Geographic Information Science in governance.
