Geo-enabling a Sustainable Future: Esri India at UNWGIC 2022

In the bustling city of Hyderabad, the Second United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress (UNWGIC 2022) recently convened, drawing leaders from across the globe in the geospatial industry. This landmark event aimed to harness geospatial information to foster sustainable development across social, economic, and environmental domains, achieving its goals through a week-long series of discussions and exhibitions.

Esri India, a prominent figure in GIS software and solutions, made significant strides at UNWGIC 2022. With enthusiastic participation in various sessions, exhibitions, and the innovative G-Chaupal platform, Esri India showcased its commitment to the theme of "Geo-Enabling the Global Village: No one should be left behind."

One of the standout initiatives highlighted was Bhu-Kaushal, a collaborative effort between Esri India and CSC Academy focused on empowering rural women through education and geospatial skills. This program not only supports India's vision of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) but also directly contributes to the UN's Sustainable Development Goal of Gender Equality. At the heart of Bhu-Kaushal are over 5000 empowered rural women who have been equipped with essential geospatial skills, underscoring Esri India's commitment to inclusive growth.

Dr. Agendra Kumar, Managing Director of Esri India, expressed pride in the recognition of these initiatives by the Ministry of Science and Technology at UNWGIC 2022. He emphasized that these programs are pivotal steps towards a world where inclusivity and progress prevail.

Another significant initiative, Mera Gaav, Hamara Jal, focuses on water resource management using GIS capabilities. Developed in collaboration with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham's UNESCO Chair on Experiential Learning, this initiative aims to transform community perceptions of water from a personal to a collective resource. It has already made substantial inroads in 14 states across India, promoting water-wise communities through innovative technology and community engagement.

Dr. Maneesha V Ramesh, from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, highlighted the transformative potential of Mera Gaav, Hamara Jal at UNWGIC 2022. By leveraging Amrita's Empower Community App for data crowdsourcing and Esri's geospatial technology for visualization, this initiative stands as a beacon for sustainable development, aligned with UN SDG 6 targets.

Throughout UNWGIC 2022, Esri India also contributed thought-provoking insights through presentations on topics such as Geospatial for Climate Challenges and Innovation in Geospatial R&D, underscoring its leadership in leveraging GIS for societal benefit.

In conclusion, UNWGIC 2022 provided a platform for Esri India to not only showcase its technological prowess but also its commitment to creating a sustainable future for all. By empowering communities and fostering meaningful collaborations, Esri India has set a precedent for harnessing geospatial innovation to address global challenges. As we reflect on the impact of these initiatives, it is evident that Esri India's efforts will continue to resonate, driving inclusive growth and sustainable development worldwide.
